Kind Mail Fall 2020 Banner

Hey, Mustangs. You’ve got mail!

We asked alumni and the Western community to send some Kind Mail and share encouraging words with students as they write exams. Here is what they had to say.

TO: Western Student

Living in Saugeen for two years was an amazing experience. I'm an introvert and I was so lucky to be paired with an outgoing roommate. We spent many evenings crammed into one room hanging out with 10 or more people in a room. I can't imagine what it is like this year with social distancing. Even with a roommate and friends, I was often homesick. I hope that you're finding ways to be social and to make friends. University and living away from home for the first time is stressful. Make sure that you take time to relax and to take the experiences in. Be brave and try things that scare you a little. Call or text a friend when you need a pick me up. It's okay to ask for help because this is a freaking weird year. Enjoy your time at Western! Take care and stay safe.

I saw this quote and wanted to share it because It's so true - "Strive for progress, not perfection". Anxiety often comes from our desire to be perfect. Just doing your best and trying hard is what matters. Remember to take breaks, call your family, laugh with friends...and study hard.

There is more to life than school! While academics are important, cultivating a life outside of studying, labs, tutorials and exams is just as necessary. And remember to not be so hard on yourself; a less than stellar mark here and there is not the end of the world. Especially in your first year. Your success in life is not measured by that mark you received in Cell Bio or Orgo. Hang in there and stay safe!

Dear student, It has been the most difficult of years. Soon enough you will be done exams and breathe (mask free!) in the warm comfort of your families. Although it seems like the utmost importance right now, your mark on a particular exam matters almost nothing to your life trajectory and you will not remember your mark on your anatomy exam or OSCE in 5 years. I do remember the terror of walking into an exam I wasn't prepared for though, and I wish I'd been able to stop and breathe. You can do this. You've got this. We are rooting for you.

Keep working hard and believe in yourself! Uni is already a major test of your resilience and perseverance and you've got a pandemic on top of that - just take one step at a time. Take care of your mind and body by taking time for yourself. Reach out and speak up if you ever feel like you need help. You'll look back on these years and be thankful for the memories, proud of yourself for completing it, and grateful for all the people you met - soak it all up while you can! I was at Delaware Hall the year it was opened and during my second year there, boys were allowed to visit on Fri and Sat nights with strict rules, very exciting. Someday you will look back fondly on your time at Western and see how it has shaped your life, but for now know, that 'this too shall' end and your marks aren't as important as you think they are. In the grand scheme of things, it is just the fact that you completed your studies there and broadened your horizons. Your future will take care of itself. Be kind to yourself and to others.

My PhD journey was not easy. I went through a lot of personal and academic challenges that affected my progress and mental health. Through perseverance and determination you can face lots of challenges and navigate through difficult times. With the help of the right resources at Western, my dream became true and I earned my PhD degree this year. Things have never been more difficult than what you are facing today with the Covid 19 pandemic. Even, our social gathering and sometimes in person communications with our educators are restricted. You have a lot of support on comps, try to find the right resources. I am positive you all are strong and will get through it successfully. You will be proud of your achievements and your loved ones will be proud too. Start safe, stay strong.

Time is a funny thing. When you are in the middle of a stressful time it feels like it is going so slowly that the difficult situation will never end. When you are in the middle of a joyous time you never want it to end and it seems to be over so fast. Remember nothing stays the same, the only constant is change. Any difficulty or stress you are in the middle of will end and you will be stronger and wiser for having lived through it.

Keep working hard but don't forget to take time out of your day for self care and fresh air! This year has brought many challenges but there's nothing that you aren't capable of. Manage your time wisely, keep in touch with people, eat food that fuels your body, and remember that you're amazing! You got this! Continue to evaluate what influences you allow in (aka social media/friendships etc). If there's anyone that makes you feel "less than", or makes you doubt yourself- change your situation. Good vibes only. It seriously makes a difference when you surround yourself with people that also want to see you win. Be proud of how far you've come and trust where you're at.

Studying for finals can get crazy. To keep yourself sane and the knowledge intact, consider summarizing everything on a blank one-page sheet to refer to, snack on healthy foods like baby carrots and frozen grapes (TRUST, they're so good), do some exercise, for anything get help if you need it, and get some sleep (so much lost sleep I will never get back wasn't always worth it, I definitely could have studied better!). Dear UWO student, best of luck on your upcoming exams. I know that learning has been particularly challenging due to the disruption related to the Covid-19 pandemic but I'm sure you will rise to the challenge and ace your exams. Covid-19 itself is a learning opportunity and a decade from now, you'll reflect back on this time and what you learned during this period. Amongst the many things, you will notice that you learned to become more independent, more entrepreneurial and flexible, more health- and environmentally conscious and you will have developed more determination for it takes a strong will to exceed at university. GOOD LUCK with the upcoming exams ... you will rock them!

You're almost done the term and what's clear to me is that the fact that you're prioritizing studying during a pandemic means that you're capable of doing really hard things, and that you're so much stronger than the challenges that you're encountering! Remember that just because we can't gather in person, it's still really important to connect virtually with friends and family at this time. Our communities are crucial, especially when we're doing difficult things. Reach out over zoom, phone your friends, take a distanced walk, and make time to take care of yourself. I had the privilege of being a Medway Monk in 1962 until I graduated. Christmas exams were really just midterms in my day so you folks have it a lot tougher with all these half courses. The really tough exams were in spring which were in MAY. Windows were open and one could hear kids behind the residence shouting and playing.

During a pandemic be thankful you are not retired and have something constructive to do e.g. study like blazes!  We retired folks read a lot and 'walk the block', cook, and just hope for the best.  I wish you luck in your courses. I too am studying entomology just for fun so I know your pain.

I bet you're settling in quite well into what will be one of the best rollercoasters in life you'll be on and I hope you're coming to love Western for all it is and finding your own place in it. Though, that might be hard at the moment because let's be candid - finals are tough (unless you've been adequately preparing all semester which... whew if you have good on you!) This can be a super stressful time, but I have a few words of advice: 1. DON'T PULL ALLNIGHTERS!!! I pulled one before my bio final in first year and yikes big mistake. 2. Ease up on the coffee. Trust me. If you can see around corners you've probably had enough :) 3. This is easy to say but take it easy - you can still come back from bad grades in first year. Reach out if you need to chat! Hi student, I graduated in 1984 (B.A. ACS Finance) when the BofC interest rate was 11.3% and unemployment was 11%. I thought it would be easy to find a good job with B.A. in hand, but quickly found otherwise. Took me 4 months to get a job paying less than expected and I had to move over 1000 kms to boot, so I know how hard things can be. My message is simple .. don't get too down, keep trying, and this too shall pass. Within 3 years after my first job I was making good money and working for a Trust company with all kinds of upward mobility. So always remember .. times WILL get better and your futures remain BRIGHT !! From your Alumni friend, Mike.

You may not realize it right now, but just like Fred VanVleet, you are betting on yourself with your education! In case you do not follow the NBA closely, Fred VanVleet is a basketball player who recently re-signed with the Toronto Raptors for an $85M USD contract for the next four years (the richest contract in NBA history for an un-drafted player). Not being drafted is analogous to no one believing in you. Going to university/college is one of the hardest things for individuals to persevere through. Why? You don't get paid to go to school. You put in the hard work, often seen by no one other than yourself, with the belief that your hard work will one day pay off, just like it did for Fred VanVleet. So no matter how hard things are, or seem to be, remember to keep betting on yourself!

Be Kind To One Another. No matter what is happening outside our walls and our windows. No matter how hopeless, how depressing our situation appears to be. We can choose to change it and the world around us. Simply by being a little kinder to one another. It is truly an easy thing to do yet such an impact it will make. One by one, one person at a time, we can make this a better world. A world we can be proud of once again. A world infused with hope and happiness. A world filled with optimism and the expectation of a better future for us. A world in which we are all a little kinder to one another.

It is what it is! We can not control everything happening around us, but we can change our attitude towards it. It is what it is! Whatever we think it will be, it will be! We need to take life one step at a time. Make each step count. It is a long journey and it will be so much easier if we just move forward, step by step. It is what it is! Live today for today. One day at a time and let tomorrow be whatever it may be. There is no need to think ahead. It will be here before we know it. So, let's just live in and for the moment. It is what it is! What a crazy year 2020 has been so far! I bet it's been a real challenge to live in residence while dealing with everything this year has thrown at us. I can't imagine how different it must be to live with all those other students while keeping yourself and your loved ones safe, too. I want you to know that someone is proud of you for staying the course. Keep working toward your goals. Things are going to get better in 2021. Have faith, study hard, make time for yourself and taking care of yourself. Schedule in some safe fun and know that all of this will be worth it when you earn that degree! Be purple and proud!

Research tells me that my brain believes what I tell it! Tell yourself what you want for yourself and believe it. Trust it. Self talk works for me. Slow, focused breathing tells my body I am not fighting, I am not fleeing. I am at peace, I am centred, I am in control. ALSO I survived because I had one wonderful friend who believed in me, refused to let me take myself too seriously and made me laugh, a lot. Maybe you can be that kind of friend to somebody else who needs to laugh and to lighten up. But first we must respect them, believe in them and be kind to them. Laugh with them, never at them.

It's unquestionable these are unprecedented times (you've heard maybe ad nauseam). In these times, you can reset what didn't work before. You can dream outside the box when you might have felt constrained. This generation is one that can change the course of your community, of your nation, of the world. When you feel beaten down, you have a community of purple to lift you up (and you can also lift up as well). Continue to be that change and in term encouraging the upcoming generation to know change is possible together.

Hello in this month of exams and assignments. It's years since I was there but I remember November as a frantic blur of trying to meet all the demands that month would bring. It was exhausting, but it did come to an end and we did survive. Fortunately people have great reserves and resiliency and we find the ability to adjust and move on. So, don't worry - 90% of our worries never happen- so they're a waste of energy. If you are homesick, and I was terribly so, try to arrange activities and contacts to keep yourself busy and engaged. I wish you success and satisfaction from your time here.

First year university is a whirlwind in normal times, and I can imagine even more so now considering the circumstances! I didn't do as well as I hoped on my first exams. It seems almost funny looking back now, because I ended up switching programs and finding something I truly enjoyed. You're going to have to make some tough and unknown choices this year (and forever after that), but always follow your passion and intuition, because they will lead you to great things. Western was the time of my life. It was such a social place and I made many new friends. I had to work hard too. I was in Honours Psychology in second year and there was a lab for every class. In my second year I stayed at Saugeen Maitland. We shared a coed dining room. Pretty exciting for those days. Hopefully there will be a vaccine before your university life is over, and still some time for a social life. We never had to cope with the kind of challenges you have today. Stay strong and take good care of your health. At least you can socialize online and complete your coursework. Wear a mask and respect the health of others too. You'll be glad you did. There's now some light at the end of the tunnel, and all of the time and effort you've put into school and your programs need your attention for exams. It seems so far away but soon you'll be here, writing to the person who lived in your dorm room in first year. My biggest word of advice would be to put yourself first! Employers don't ask for a transcript of your grades. I failed every midterm in my first semester of university! If you feel tired, go to bed or take a nap. If you want to eat your craving food, eat it! Treat your body and your mind well and you will do well. You are more than a grade on a transcript. Hey there -- exams are upon you! And I remember how daunting that could feel. In addition to carving out dedicated, focused study time, I want to offer you a piece of advice: remember to carve out "break times" too. Actually schedule them in your calendar and stick to it the way you would honour an exam time. Taking care of yourself -- going for a walk, reading a non-school book, enjoying a cup of coffee with a friend (even if it's over zoom) will go a long way to keeping you grounded. You've got this!

Are these your first final exams? I would say, "You've got this!" but maybe you don't. You might fail, and if you do, you're not the only one. You might succeed, and if you do, you're not the only one. If you do poorly this time around, you will learn and grow and do better next time, or the time after that. And if you do really well, don't get to comfy because you won't always find exams easy. All I'm trying to say is that first year first semester marks aren't a hill to die on. Heck, University marks in general aren't a hill to die on. Try your hardest, learn from your mistakes, improve every day, explore new things, leave your comfort zone, and become resilient. If you can do that, University is working for you.

And while it's understandable to feel overwhelmed, here is your reminder to take a deep breath and remind yourself it will all be okay. Everything is temporary, so this period WILL pass and soon enough you will be taking a well deserved break and enjoying the holidays. In the meantime, take it day by day, study the best you can, but also listen to your body and allow it to rest and recharge regularly. What a year to be a student.  But look at you making it through - one day at a time.  I've often compared the challenges of this year to how overwhelmed & stressed I felt during exams at Western.  It all just feels like so much (*too much, even*) all at once.  What always helped me tread through was seeing the finish line - seeing myself hand in that last paper, that last exam & picturing how relieved I would feel after that last hard thing.  Try to keep seeing the light at the end of your challenging academic tunnel.  And in the mean time, drink lots of water, REST, go for a walk, connect with people who understand your struggles & take deep breaths & breaks.  There IS another side to this that will feel lighter - nothing will feel this hard.  Keep going, keep dreaming & take good care of YOU.

I remember being extremely stressed for exams. I would struggle not only to study for all of my exams, but also while writing them. Panic, anxiety, and the fear of not performing well, or well enough. But whenever I spoke to my mom over the phone, everything felt instantly better. She motivated me to study, wished me well, and after the exam, when things didn't go as I had hoped, she told me it will be alright, and I can always try harder next time. The truth is, if you try your best, you have no choice but to be happy with the result. Whatever that may be. University is hard enough without the stress that Covid adds. Know that you are doing so amazingly by just simply "being". While your studies and grades are important, they are not nearly as important as your overall health, specifically your mental health. Lean on the people around you- take the time you need for self care- and treat yourself with the kindness you treat others with. I know y'all are creative enough to still find a way to have fun while social distancing. I hope you and your roomie have bonded in the time spent together. As far as exams, I hope studying is going well. It may be nice to get to do your exams online. I was never a fan of the exams in a large room with tons of other people. You can do this! Go Mustangs!

It feels like just yesterday that I was in your shoes... In first year, living in res, just trying to figure everything out! 4 years later and I have graduated, become a Registered Nurse, and gotten a full time job...i guess this is adulting! And soon, after all this hard work...you will get there too! Keep pushing...I know exam time is hard, especially through the winter months, but you got this! Even though we're living through a pandemic, try to find creative, safe, ways to be social...this is so important for your mental wellbeing and overall success as a student. I know this part of the school year can be a real sprint with finals to cram for, papers to write, and cold, long waits for the bus to endure. That's why it's paramount that you listen to that voice inside you these weeks and take care of yourself, so you don't burn out. Give yourself time each day to sleep and recharge your batteries. Eat something daily that grew directly out of the ground or off a tree. Breathe some fresh air daily even if it's through a facemask. Lean on those around you that want what's best for you, whether that's your family or roommates, or that friendly employee at your favourite Shawarma spot that always gives you extra hummus because you're a starving student and they believe in you! Split work studying for exams into sections and be specific. I prefer writing it on paper so that I could cross it off when done, making you feel accomplished. Then give yourself a specific amount of time to study each section. This helps to keep you focused to get all of the work covered. Try to keep to the schedule but make notes on areas of difficulty that you can ask for help on from classmates, friends, TA's or professors. I always found a cup of hot chocolate helped stay on task! Looking back on my experience as a Brescia student, I have so much to be thankful for! One of my greatest blessings from Brescia are the friends that I made. Clare Hall is a comfortable residence, but don't forget to step out of your comfort zone and meet your neighbours. You never know, they could be your very best friend down the road. My best friend lived next door to me in residence and it wasn't until November that we finally met each other! Stay connected and reach out to those around you!

I have very fond memories of meeting many people from a variety of backgrounds during my SMH time. The support of my floor mates helped me through a lot of hard times. A lot of hugs helped me see that one mistake does not ruin your future. These days you have to find creative ways of supporting each other, but I know you are up to the task. Of course your residence mates and friends are not the only ones there to support you, your professors are also on your side. Accessing their expertise can help you develop a broader understanding of the material making it easier for you to complete your course work. Find some fun in each day. We are all cheering for you!

End-of-term is always tough, but this year, it's especially so. That's why I think it's important to take things one day at a time - it can get stressful if you look at the long list of things to do. But what 2 or 3 things can you do today that will help the list get a little shorter, and help get you a little closer to the finish line. The residence community was a source of support and also of high jinks that made one laugh and forget the stresses of end of term. At least we knew we were all in it together! The isolation forced on everyone due to Covid-19 makes all kinds of stress feel worse than ever, yet there are still warm thoughts directed your way by those who also have known the stresses of student life even if that was "way back when". Yes, things actually do get better - hang in there, be kind to yourself (as in taking a break just to relax now and then, yes even for a few minutes a couple of times a day). I've been thinking a lot about what it might be like to be a University student right now as the world experiences this challenging time, particularly those who entered first year & those whose time at UWO is inching towards graduation. This year's circumstances might not be quite what you had pictured for any of your University years but, in addition to broadening your knowledge base, these years are priming you for your future. Among many other things, your future will require you to exhibit resilience & an ability to adapt to change & unexpected challenges. So, you have an advantage over those who came before you because you will have had to learn & demonstrate these things more so than anyone else in recent history. I know you can rise to this occasion - you've got this! Best wishes.

This is the time for preparing the fields in temperatures well over 45 degrees. Every year, farmers face the chance of drought or flood or army worms, and yet they faithfully prepare. I learn from their example and hang on to hope. Be encouraged today to prepare against all odds. Peace to you, joanna

I remember feelings of uncertainty, both in my undergraduate years and Ivey years. It may be impossible to see the magical possibilities now, but a curious outlook will always serve you well. Try to avoid the adverse feelings of intense competition. You may be better off charting out and running your own race, driven by what you love. Don't be afraid to take risks; the real learning comes from mistakes. The interests in technology, geography, and social enterprise took me and my family to one of the remotest islands in the world at a unique time in its history, to support the development of major changes. I am grateful my experiences at Western have prepared me well for the path leading up to this experience.

Hello! It is hard to believe that it is exam time....where does the time go?  Especially in these Covid times, the time seems to go faster even though we are doing less. I am not sure how that works.  Time going fast does not work during exams as there never seems to be enough time to study.  Not to worry!  You will prevail and the exams will go amazing.  One day you will look back and remember studying maybe in the basement of Delaware?  Believe it or not, those will be fond memories.  Wishing you all the best for a successful exam cycle. Be well and enjoy the upcoming holidays. Cheers!!

By embarking on this journey in a year like this you are doing what none of us have done. Be proud of what you are doing. Be proud of what you have learned. As a member of the Western community as alumni and also staff, I am proud of you for taking on this year and doing your best. As you go through school, I hope you will learn what I did: that feedback and growth are important, and grades do not define you. The sooner you can shift your mindset, the better learning experience you will have. Help one another, and reach out online for connection. Connect with the city, and get outside once a day. The outdoors are always open, and there are gorgeous trails accessible from all corners of campus, reach out for ideas where to start!

Weird times huh? Head down to the Subway on Western and Sarnia for a little study break! I always ordered a footlong veggie flatbread (so much that they memorized my order hahaha) to clear my head a bit. Or go for a short walk, have a shower, binge some Netflix -- whatever you need to do to recharge. It's been a strange time for everyone, and you deserve to stay energized in whatever way works for you! I remember feeling at times that nothing was worth it, and that I was wasting my time and money. Almost 7 years later, I'm the happiest I've been in my career, and I've learned so much about myself. This year has been a strange and difficult year, but you are doing great so far! It is important that you are taking care of yourself - get a good night's sleep, eat healthy, get outside for some fresh air, take study breaks, talk to your family and friends, and move your body. Most of your time and energy will go to studying, but make sure to have some small moments of fun! Think about one thing that you like to do for fun...that thing that brings you joy, that makes you smile from ear to ear. Is it dancing, playing basketball, baking, painting, playing video games, building a snowman, or listening to your favourite music? Take that 5-10 minute break and do something that is fun and brings you joy! Hang in there, you are doing amazing! Take care of yourself and the people around you!

I remember the months of November and December in my first year at Western. Major worries financially and also related to grades and not wanting to disappoint myself or others. In looking back it always seemed that one course per term posed more of a challenge. In the end, I was able to pass first year and thereafter it seemed smoother. After graduation and a period of working, I returned to Western and completed a graduate degree. After 30 years as a professor, I still remember my first year at Delaware Hall and the time of studying and wondering if I would make it. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. It holds true today as it did before and it is the grit and your desire and belief in your goal that will get you there. Remember your purpose, you will get all the success and the money you desire but what you will not get back is your time today. Use it, use it to the best of your ability and with the ones you love. Remember mistakes are those which we know nothing about so if someone says you're wrong, be humble. And be kind for kindness has a way of finding its way back to you. Remember to take some time for yourself during the hectic days ahead, and go for walks, meditate and exercise. When I'm feeling particularly anxious, I like to use the Pomodoro Technique to complete my work - I set a timer for 25 minutes, complete one task (e.g. reading a page, making notes, or organizing) without distractions, and then take a 5-minute break after I have completed the task. After I complete 4 Pomodoro's, I take a longer break. This method enables me to focus and be productive while engaging in mental wellness. Hope this helps you! Good luck :)

We are so proud of you for the hard work you are doing this term, and I promise there is a payoff in the end for the time spent now on your schoolwork. Take time to build friendships this year, these last a lifetime. Respect each other enough to wear a mask and practice social distancing until we can get hold of this virus. This is a small inconvenience that won't last forever. If you can't make it home for the holiday, as in the case for my daughter in Halifax, please know that those at home miss you, and while we want you to be home, we would rather you be safe and avoid travel if you can. Do something that makes you happy, organize a zoom call with friends or family, exercise, and make a home cooked meal! It's strange times but don't wish it away, find ways to make the best of your time and experience at UWO!

No matter how stressful finals can be, just remember to push through and take the time to find balance between studying and taking those much needed breaks! Grab a coffee from Timmies or hang out safely with your small circle of friends, your mental health always comes first. Try not to stress and enjoy the little things which can make your day better. You are all in this together and will make it through just as I did. Wishing you all the best of luck on your finals!

Oh hey there! Look at you go...totally ROCKING this whole University "thing" -- and did I mention that your smile can brighten the darkest of days! Though VERY strange times right now, know that things will begin to brighten soon, and that smile of yours is the first step! Spread that smile around -- around campus, around town, EVERYWHERE! University was truly one of the best times of my life, and trying to make the most of everyday is what made it that way!! I wish you nothing but the absolute best, and know that people - people you don't even know - are rooting for you and can't WAIT to see how you will make the world a better place! Hi Mustangs! What a year, huh? I hope you're hanging in there. My heart goes out to all of you who are pursuing your education goals during such stressful times. Remember, there are many things more important than good grades, especially now! My advice for any exam season is to prioritize your well-being and learn how to respect your own limits. Now, more than ever, it's so important to take care of yourselves and each other (in a responsible, socially-distanced way!). Take breaks, check-in with loved ones, exercise, eat well, and sleep the best you can. All hard times will pass, even these! And while you're at it, hold yourself accountable to the way you represent the Western community. Make safe, responsible, and considerate choices that your community would be proud of. Good luck!

Hello! During this time of studying for your finals be sure to take care of you! Surround yourself in nature! I always loved walking on the trails behind Saugeen and following the river. Western has such a beautiful campus with historic architecture. Take it all in to clear and calm your mind. Disconnect from technology for a while. Take a break from your mask and breathe in the fresh air while standing on top of UC hill, absorbing the sunshine and looking ahead to the trees sprinkled before you. Stretch! Walk. Take the stairs. Sleep well. Take a nap if you need. Call a friend. Call your parents. Hug yourself. Hug your pillow. Wishing you all the best! Sheila

These times are unpredictable but know how absolutely proud I am of you for studying and getting this far. If someone hasn't told you how proud they are of you well now they have. You are doing amazing! You are a ray of sunshine and you are going to crush your exams!

Self-care goes a long way and I am fortunate enough to be able to teach people yoga and Chi gong and mindfulness, all effective ways of calming body and mind. It wasn't fulfilled as quickly as I would have liked nor in a straight line at all, but I wasn't letting the voices of teachers, professors or anyone else get in the way of my path. You cannot pour from an empty cup. <3 Even though it's not always possible to take care of yourself in the ways you wish you could, no one has ever managed to do their best work (or even mostly their best work) without sleep, food, and support from others. Some days, it might be hard to get all three of these let alone ANY of the three. But there is always time to stop and drink some water, to rest, to have a shower or bath, and to nourish your body. One of my biggest regrets is letting my desire to do perfect academic work completely override my health. Once I became a parent, that was no longer an option, and you know what? Once I gave myself permission to do good (not perfect) work, and to take care of my body and my mental health, I came into my own as a scholar. Take care!

I know this really challenging time of year is made so much more difficult this year by all of the pressures brought on by COVID. My mother was famous for saying, "this too shall pass dear". And she was right! All of the challenges do pass; they do settle. Even the really big ones don't last forever. Please know that you are not alone, and that no matter how stressed, despairing, or afraid, you might feel, none of what you are going through now will last forever. And don't ever doubt that you matter. Your thoughts matter. Your feelings matter. You matter! Hold your thoughts & feelings, and those of your peers, with as much kindness & compassion as you can muster. Even though I only know some of you, I'm holding all of you in my thoughts. You matter to me, and I'm cheering you on! :-) Dr W

I've only recently graduated, and it is still hard to believe I've finished it all. I just want to let you know that even if particular dreams of yours are hard to believe, such as you succeeding through school, or in other facets of your life, it doesn't mean it won't happen. Anxiety is one of the worst feelings to experience and I find that the best way to contend with it is to realize that these conspiracy theories we form about our futures are not real. Only the here and now is real. The present moment. So my wish for you is to not let the anxieties of the future, nor the regrets of the past hinder your present reality too much. Hey there! I know this year definitely isn't what you expected, and things have totally turned upside down. And whatever you're feeling is totally valid. But as always, please put yourself first. You're a human being before you're a student, leader, or friend, so do what you need to take care of your physical and emotional wellness. Deadlines are important, but set time aside for yourself to unwind. Check in with your friends, as "how are you, really" but also check in with yourself. Nobody is expected to have all the answers or have it together all the time, and you deserve to be in your program just as much as anyone else. Never forget that! You will find in your career it is the people around you that can handle the stress of unprecedented times who are the ones that make it. People need leadership and determination! With exams coming up, I wanted to share a gentle reminder that being a student does NOT have to mean studying all of the time. Now more than ever, you should be taking time for yourself. Whether that's cuddling up with your roommate(s) with a cozy beverage of choice and watching a holiday movie, ordering take-out because you're tired of caf food, or going for long relaxing walks through campus. Hey you! Even though it may not always feel like it, you're doing great. There were many stressful periods during my undergraduate and graduate degrees--in both my academics and my personal life--where I remember thinking I wasn't going to get through those times. In those moments, I would often come to the conclusion that the feeling of being overwhelmed, frustrated and sad would never end--but strangely, it always did. I would reflect afterwards and feel surprised that I made it through. But we are stronger than we give ourselves credit for. Hey there! I hope this message finds you well. It feels like just yesterday that I was living in Saugeen writing my first ever set of university exams! Exams can be super stressful but trust me when I tell you that everything works out in the end and you will accomplish amazing things! Remember to eat well, keep your body moving and take time for your mental health. You've got this!

Dear Students, it's been a long time since I began my journey at Western as a resident of 5 upper (saugeen). It was an amazing experience and something I reflect on often. I know this year is different, and probably not what you had envisioned, but it's only a small point in the long journey of life. Make the most of it, enjoy your time and be proud that you will soon be a western graduate. Greetings from Stuttgart, Jen

This year has been super tough for everyone. But you are solid and you've got this. Wherever you are for the final push to exams - in res, back at home - remember you can do incredible things if you lean into it. Keep going. Get outside every day for some air. My time at Western was the best. I played powder puff football in the snow and got a black eye the day before our formal! My eye makeup matched my purple velvet gown. Take some time away from your studies to go for a walk and get a breath of fresh air. It helps clear the cobwebs and allows you the opportunity to start back refreshed. Best of luck, you've got this!

Hey, young person! I hope you're surviving these crazy times. I'm presently teaching a remote high school math class & can empathize with how learning behind a screen is exhausting & demoralizing at times. Be sure to keep a safe, core group of friends nearby to ensure that your mental health is in GOOD health. My favorite part of the work day is seeing physical human beings (away from the screen) and laughing together. Get those laughs in! One thing I've learned recently is: when all else fails just breathe. Like literally. Sit there and breathe in and out. That's all you've gotta do. If you're having a bad day, remember a good sleep goes a long way!! If you're bored...walk up and down the massive hill on campus - it's good heart health. Stay safe. Stay happy. Make good choices!

Please remember that this day did not come to last, it came to pass. One morning you will wake up and the storm will be over. Just focus on that and put your head down making it through one day at a time, one step at a time, one breath at a time. Resilience is the key and you wouldn't have made it this far without some. I didn't realize what made me excited until I started trying different clubs, sports, trips. All this just points to one big element.... Your gut. The sooner you start trusting your instincts, your gut instinct, the sooner you zero in on the things that make staying up all night worth while, and dare I say enjoyable :) So do yourself a favour, and listen to what your bowels tell you, whether it's time to take a nap, or just go to the bathroom... I distinctly remember around this time spending the little money we had left (before January OSAP came in) to buy Christmas trees and as many decorations as we could get our hands on to brighten up not only my room, but 3 other friends' rooms as well. Even though we had very little money and had to lug these trees up from the TD stadium parking lot, it gave us a little taste of home around the holidays! Even though this is an exciting time of year, I know it can be difficult to be in residence and not at home with your family. Lean on your friends and put up a few decorations. It goes a long way :)
