Susan Haigh is an outstanding leader in the development and delivery of progressive information policies and services required for dynamic learning, impactful research and a just society. With more than three decades of national and international engagement in the service of libraries, archives, academia and research, Susan is a staunch advocate for the right to open and accessible information.

Susan’s early career was spent in progressively responsible positions within Library and Archives Canada. Between 2000-14, she had a key role in crafting national digital strategies that laid the foundation for many of the major initiatives that continue to provide expertise, infrastructure and a conducive policy environment for researchers and students.

In 2014, Susan was appointed the executive director of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries, which provides leadership on behalf of the country’s 29 largest research libraries and enhances capacity to advance research in higher education. Under Susan’s leadership, the organization has protected fair dealing of information for Canadian citizens under the Copyright Act. At the Supreme Court of Canada, Susan was instrumental in safeguarding universities from punitive tariffs that would have undermined the ability of students and faculty to equitably access resources for their research and study.

Susan remains a catalyst for international research library collaborations. She was one of the founding executive directors of the International Alliance of Research Associations, a group that works to develop positions in support of an emerging international research library agenda and open scholarship. She chairs the board of the Global Sustainability Coalition for Open Science Services. She is also active in the International Federation of Library Associations as a champion for library advocacy and policy matters. She regularly provides wisdom and insight through publications and presentations at various national and international fora.

Susan goes about her work in a decisive, informed, careful, diplomatic and effective manner, navigating complex issues with ease. A strong mentor, Susan’s colleagues commend her ability to recognize and nurture the talents and strengths of those she works with. Susan’s achievements and proven track record make her a clear choice for the Professional Achievement Award.
