Rick Konrad, BA’75

Rick Konrad embodies the spirit of the Dr. Ivan Smith Award, Western Alumni’s highest honour, through his remarkable contributions to society, the university and the Alumni Association. His extensive experience in finance, dedication to education and commitment to philanthropy make him a worthy candidate for this keystone recognition.
First in his family to attend university, Rick gained a broad perspective on how to analyze and factor the human element into his research and reasoning during his undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Science at Western. Following graduation, Rick earned his master of science in finance from Northeastern University and achieved Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Analyst designations. He also studied behavioural investing at the Harvard Business School Executive Program.
Rick co-founded Blueprint Financial and founded Value Architects Asset Management, showcasing his innovative spirit and leadership in the financial sector. His career is marked by significant roles in investment management.
Rick's contributions to Western are substantial and multifaceted. He helped oversee policies and issues related to the university's endowment and investments during his decade-long tenure as a member of the Investment Committee. He served on the Board of Governors for eight years, including a two-year term as chair and served as an ex-officio member of the Fundraising and Donor Relations Committee. He was also part of the Presidential Selection Committee. Rick’s involvement through these roles exemplifies his commitment to the university and the organization’s financial health and governance.
In memory of his father, Reinhard Konrad, Rick established student scholarships and bursaries at Western, providing financial assistance to deserving students and enhancing their educational experiences. Rick is truly committed to supporting the Western community and future leaders. To date, 250 Western students have benefitted from his generous nature.
Rick's philanthropic impact extends beyond Western. He has served on the Shareholder Advisory Council to Sallie Mae, a leading provider of student loans in the United States. In this role, he was instrumental in suggesting policies to achieve cost savings to increase funding for student lending. The impact of his contributions has been felt throughout the organization, universities and colleges at a time of major turmoil, providing direct benefits to countless students and their families.
Rick is known by colleagues as a kind, considerate and thoughtful volunteer. His ongoing efforts to support and uplift others, both within the Western community and beyond, reflect the highest standards of excellence and service.
