Message from Western Mustangs Athletic Alumni President, Dennis Hinschberger

As I write my message to our Mustang faithful, I must admit I’m feeling a bit down as the frivolity of summer vacationing with family and friends comes to its inevitable conclusion, and I wonder if you feel the same. But if you’re like me, my spirits begin to quickly rise again. I’m ready to swap my summer flip flops for cowboy boots in anticipation of the fast-approaching, action-packed, Western fall sports season full of Mustang competition and, of course, celebration!

As most of you already know, in London and across the nation, purple is the color of sport excellence when classes are in session, and we sincerely hope you take the opportunity to connect with the 2025 – 26 version of all our Mustang student-athletes.

In this edition of The Scoop, Christine Stapleton provides an update on what Mustangs were up to this past summer, as well as Sports & Recreation’s key initiatives and updates for the coming school year, laying the foundation for successful student athlete experiences. Your Western Mustang Athletic Alumni will be right beside her helping to build the connections that support our Mustangs past and present. Our volunteer board and key collaborators remain committed to celebrating the positive shared experience of our 40,000-strong Mustang athletic alumni and future alumni!

We can’t wait to congratulate, celebrate and recognize our outstanding varsity alumni at the Western Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, Sept. 26 at RBC Place in London.

We count ourselves fortunate to have mentors and leaders like Al Morrow, BA'72 and Thérèse Quigley, BA'75, BEd'77, our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. Both are bona fide Western sports legends who have contributed immeasurably to the field of sports in Canada, to the legacy of Western Mustangs sports success and to enriching the lives of thousands of athletes across our nation for decades.

We welcome national championship men’s baseball teams from the 2005-07 era, as well as the championship teams of 1985--86 in Woman’s Soccer. We also look forward to recognizing five male and three female inductees at this momentous ceremony, led by our Master of Ceremonies, and Western track superstar alum, Jeff Glass, BA’84, LLB’88, HBA’89. I encourage you to join us at what will be an evening of reconnection with fellow alumni and a celebration of these great individuals. Please click here to purchase tickets.

Have fun reading The Scoop newsletter and I hope to see you this fall!
