Introducing the 2024 Western Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame women’s individual inductees

The 2024 Western Sports Hall of Fame women’s individual inductees include Brianne Barry, BMOS'13 (wrestling), Jayne Cation, BSc'08 (rugby), Cindy Elliott Pavan, BA'80 (volleyball), and Ellie Seedhouse, BA'11 (hockey).

Brianne Barry

Wresting for the Mustangs from 2009-14, Brianne medaled in 14 tournaments and emerged as the champion in 12. She won five straight Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships, as well as three Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) silver medals before winning the championship title in 2014 and being named Outstanding Female Wrestler by the organization. She has earned several honours and has represented Team Canada at numerous international tournaments including the 2013 Jeux de la Francophonie where she won a bronze medal, and the 2012 and 2014 Canadian Cup where she won the bronze and silver medal respectively. In 2015 Brianne won the top title at the Canadian Championships.

Brianne’s induction marks the first parent/daughter induction in the history of the Western Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame. Brianne’s father, Mike, an Olympic wrestler, was inducted in 2006.

Jayne Cation

A decorated athlete, Jayne played for Western’s rugby team from 2004-08, acting as the team captain for her final two seasons. Along with her teammates she won three OUA championships and two CIS championships, as well as OUA and CIS silver medals. She earned a number of honours including both CIS and OUA Rookie of the Year in 2004.

Jayne has competed extensively at provincial and national levels. She was a member of the Ontario team and won a national title, and the Canadian team where she served as captain in her second year. She was also part of the Ontario Rugby Senior Team, winning two national championships, the Rugby Canada U23 team, the Rugby Canada Senior A Team, and in 2006 part of the rostered reserve for the Senior Women’s National Team at the World Cup.

Cindy Elliott Pavan

Cindy competed for Western from 1975-81 during one of the most successful eras of Mustangs volleyball, serving as the captain during her last two seasons. Cindy sat out the 1978-79 season while training with Canada’s national team. During Cindy’s athletic career the Mustangs finished top two in Canada for three consecutive seasons, including first in 1975, and won three consecutive Ontario championships. She was the recipient of several honours and awards including being named a Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (now U SPORTS) All-Star.

Ellie Seedhouse

Ellie played hockey for Western from 2007-11. In 2010 she competed as part of a team of OUA all-stars against the U18 National team. The all-stars won 4-2 with Ellie getting an assist.

In 2011 Ellie represented Canada at the Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey where she won a gold medal. In the 2014 Canada Women’s Hockey League Draft, Ellie joined the Brampton Thunder. She played for the Thunder (initially in Brampton and then in Markham) from 2014-18, winning the Clarkson Cup during her final season.
