The Rink Rat
A fundraiser for the men's hockey team.
A self-described "little, lefthanded, redhead of a single mother from the wrong side of the tracks,” Ron “Whipper” Watson grew up hoping to be a high school physical education teacher. He didn’t imagine becoming a professor at one of the oldest, highly respected universities in Canada.
Just in time for the holidays, Ron’s book The Rink Rat, talks about his 55-year coaching career, and is now available for purchase. All proceeds from the sale of this book support the Western Mustangs men’s hockey team.
In the book's acknowledgements, Ron talks about the importance of preserving the Purple and Proud Mustangs Hockey history. The Rink Rat links hockey at Western from its inception in 1906 to the CIS Championships in 2020.
"I wanted to tell my life story, a large part of which involved building the Mustangs hockey program under very difficult circumstances, and many stories about Mustang players after they graduated," Ron said.
In February 2021, The Western Mustangs Athletic Alumni gave men's hockey $1000 for support to publish The Rink Rat.
