I had the privilege of attending the dinner on September 27, 2024, an unforgettable evening hosted by Marnie McBean, BA'97, LLD'03 - three-time Olympic gold medalist, Canadian Sports Hall of Famer, and, perhaps most importantly, a former Western Mustang rower. As a current member of the Western Mustangs rowing team, it was an extraordinary experience to hear Marnie reflect on her own journey as a Mustang, offering insight into the grit, determination, and passion that shaped her remarkable career.

The night was made even more special as the 1980 Women's Heavyweight Rowing Team was inducted into the Hall of Fame, a group whose legacy is defined by their numerous achievements, including multiple Canadian Championship gold medals, victories at the Canadian Junior and Senior Henley Regattas, and a silver medal at an international regatta in Mexico. One of the rowers on the team, Angela Schneider, was also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Listening to the stories of these trailblazing women - who once stood exactly where I do now - was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Their accomplishments were a powerful reminder of the heights to which commitment and teamwork can propel you, and hearing their journeys left me feeling deeply motivated.

The energy and pride that filled the room as we celebrated these athletes' legacies was invigorating, providing a renewed sense of purpose as we head into our own competition season. This evening not only deepened my admiration for the Western rowing community but also strengthened my resolve to hopefully contribute to that legacy in my own way.

It was a night I will cherish forever, and I look forward to the opportunity to attend again, to honour more Mustangs and the enduring spirit of excellence they represent.
