Message from WMAA President, Pat Kitchen
By Pat Kitchen
I hope you have enjoyed a restful summer. As we look ahead to the fall, I feel a sense of excitement that Western varsity sports will soon be back in season! I look forward to attending games and events in support of our student-athletes, and I hope to see you out there cheering on our Mustangs.
In this edition of the Scoop, Christine Stapleton looks to the future of Mustangs athletics, providing us with an overview of Sports & Recreation’s strategic plan. The WMAA is embarking on its own strategic planning process in September. We look forward to engaging our board and key collaborators as we refresh the plan, which will guide the WMAA for the next five years.
We can’t wait to congratulate and celebrate our outstanding varsity alumni at the Western Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame Dinner on September 22. I know you will enjoy reading about the many accomplishments and contributions of these individuals and teams in this edition of the Scoop. They continue to make incredible contributions to the university and the communities in which they live.
We count ourselves fortunate to have mentors and leaders like Bob Barney and Karen Danylchuk, our Lifetime Achievement recipients who continue to contribute to the field of sports. We welcome teams from the Glynn Leyshon era of wrestling, the 1979 Men’s Varsity 8 Lightweight Rowing squad and the 2001/2002 Women’s Track and Field team. As well, we anticipate the celebration of the eight individual inductees at the ceremony. I encourage you to join us at what will be an evening of reconnection with fellow alumni and celebration of these great individuals. Please click HERE to purchase tickets.
Have fun reading our Scoop newsletter and I hope to see you this fall.
