Five tips for making a career change
Has your job lost its luster? Maybe it’s time to make a change. Here are five tips to help you make a career change.
1. Make a list of what you enjoy about your current work.
Consider projects you’ve worked on, your day-to-day tasks, and your workplace culture. Do you prefer working on a team or independently? Do you enjoy predictability or variety? Identify the elements you want to carry into your next role.
2. Identify your strengths.
Review your résumé and highlight your transferable skills. Ask someone you trust to review it for an objective opinion. Then, consider how each skill could translate into a different career path.
3. Learn from people already doing the work you want to do.
Connect with people working in the fields that interest you. Learn about the industry, the roles available and the skills required. Ask what it would take to make the transition—and whether you might need to take courses, volunteer, or gain experience in another way.
4. Create a transition timeline.
Set a realistic deadline for your career change and work backwards to map out the steps. Set achievable goals that keep you organized, motivated, and moving beyond your comfort zone.
5. Track your progress and be willing to adapt.
Refer to your timeline regularly to stay on track. Adjust as needed—having a plan is valuable, but flexibility is key.
