Since retiring to France, Dr. Paul Davenport, Western’s President Emeritus, has led 11 Western Alumni cycling trips in France and the Netherlands.

Our 2023 trip is a bike and barge tour in France, Luxembourg and Germany, along the meandering Moselle River!

This is the same ship we used on the 2022 Netherlands trip and our cyclists were so pleased with the ship, the crew, the meals, and the whole experience, that we decided to explore another region with this tour company.

Each day will offer a long and a short bicycle option. The time on the bikes is broken during the day for lunch and visits to the various sites. During the day you will cycle, in two groups, led by local cycling guides, while at night you will relax in the comfort of your floating hotel.

Cycle on this tour from Metz, France to Cochem, Germany through the beautiful – and flat Moselle river valley. Along the way visit picturesque towns and villages, scenic vineyards, castles and Ancient Roman sites, and indulge in the region’s fine Riesling wines. Your journey begins with a three-night hotel stay in Paris, continues on the Princesse Royal and ends with a final night at a Frankfurt airport hotel.

The trip is designed for physically active alumni and friends. The level of difficulty is rated at 1 out of 4. 1 is the easiest level. The terrain is flat. A limited number of e-bikes are available at an added cost of $175. Please request when booking if you would like one.

Total time on the bikes is seven days. It is easy to take a day away from cycling and spend the day on the boat and your fellow travellers will join you onboard at the next port.
