As an influential corporate and commercial law scholar, Khimji’s work has shaped legal thinking in areas ranging from the conceptualizing of property rights in financial assets to the evolution of secured lending regimes.

‘Expanding access to justice:’ New Western Law project supports people navigating family court
A new initiative of Western Law’s Community Legal Services is broadening access to justice in London, Ont. while helping to reduce the administrative burden on the local court system. The Court Assistance Program provides free legal information and support to self-represented individuals navigating the Superior Court of Justice Family Court.

Western study shows mindfulness law course positively impacts student well-being
Professor Thomas Telfer created Western Law’s Mindfulness and the Legal Profession course in 2019 to support student well-being. Now, a collaborative qualitative study based on student reflections of his upper-year credit course reveals the course had a significant impact on participants’ mental health.

Leading commercial law scholars from across the country gathered at Western Law on September 13 for the ninth Canadian Commercial Law Symposium. The symposium brings Canadian academics together annually to discuss current issues and research in commercial law as a field of study distinct from the broader subject of business law.

‘Practise what you want to become’: Class of 2028 called to embody professionalism and civility
Western Law’s annual Induction Ceremony, centered on the faculty’s Professionalism Pledge, has become an important tradition for incoming JD students. On September 2, the class of 2028 proudly took the pledge and were welcomed into the legal profession with inspiring remarks from distinguished speakers including keynote Katherine Di Tomaso (’03), civil litigator at Stieber Berlach LLP.

Leila Rafi (LLB ’05) is Partner, Capital Markets & Securities at McMillan LLP where she advises on corporate finance, investment fund and asset management, and regulatory and corporate governance matters frequently. Rafi recently answered 10 questions about her career, her volunteer pursuits and returning to Western Law to teach Introduction to Securities Regulation this fall.
