A new home for a bright future
We are excited to share the new home of our Mary J. Wright Child and Youth Development Clinic (MJW-CYDC), which is now located at the Faculty of Education Building at 1137 Western Rd.
In the photo at the top of the newsletter, you'll see MJW-CYDC Director Dr. Colin King, Education Dean Dr. Donna Kotsopoulos, and MJW-CYDC Assistant Director Dr. Katelyn Bryant standing inside the Clinic's new lobby.
On April 8th, we'll host a grand opening as we honour this milestone for supporting youth mental health in our community. If you are interested in attending, please contact our Director of Community Engagement and Development Rosie Triebner at rtriebne@uwo.ca.

Claire Crooks earns posthumous recognition on Mayor's honour list
We were delighted to see Dr. Claire Crooks named posthumously to London, Ont. Mayor Josh Morgan's 2025 New Year's honour list.
The late professor, researcher, and groundbreaking psychologist was recognized in the Distinguished Londoner category for her dedicated and data-driven approach to improving youth mental health.

Our PhD candidate Petra Owusu was featured in Western News for her work on engaging Black youth to improve their access to mental health services.
Her research identifies barriers, while addressing a lack of race-based data in Canada.

What parents should know about early reading screening in Ontario classrooms
Ontario families with children in senior kindergarten to Grade 2 would likely have seen the results of reading screenings on report cards sent earlier this year.
Dr. Katelyn Bryant, Assistant Director and Supervising Psychologist for our Mary J. Wright Child and Youth Development Clinic, explains the importance of these screenings and what families can do to address early reading concerns.

Providing a ray of sunshine through special education
Joey McDowell, BEd ’99, reflects on her passion for special education and the importance of learning from those around you.
“Just be open to learning and really take your cues from your students,” said McDowell, who is pictured third from the right in the photo above alongside former students and a colleague from The W.D. Sutton School at Vanier Children's Mental Wellness.
“They lead you. They take you where you need to go.”

Reflections from a passionate teacher
Education alum Bill McHugh looks back on the best year of his university experience, as well as the three decades of teaching that followed.
“If I had to do it over again, I would do it exactly the same way,” McHugh said.
“I enjoyed going to school every day of my life.”
