Nora Jean (Boyd) Nickson, HBA’62

won a gold medal at the U.S. National Senior Games in Des Moines Iowa in July 2025. She competed in women’s doubles in Pickleball in the 85-89 age division with Marilyn Beckner from Chattanooga Tennessee.

Allison Mccaffrey, BA’84

has been elected Vice President of the Alberta Teachers’ Association after four years as President of Calgary Catholic Teachers. 

Parteek Smagh, MEng’ 20

purchased their first home in Canada.

Emily Opthof, BSc(FN)’17

proudly received the gold medal and Provincial Champion title in the Silver Artistic Free Program event at the 2025 Skate Ontario Adult Championships in Kanata, ON. She looks forward to preparing for the 2025-26 competitive season!

Douglas Lester, BA’74, MEd’80

ran twice the Earth’s circumference at 49,804 miles, achieving an incredible feat. A dedicated runner since 1979, he reached his first “lap” in 2003 and his second in 2024 at 78 years old. His passion and drive continue to inspire alumni and runners alike.

Jenni Denniston, BA’02, HBA’04

was on a small group trip to the UK in December 2024 and coincidentally met fellow alumni Peter Douglas, MBA’64, and Sue Mather, MD’87. They had fun reminiscing and sharing stories of their respective times in London.

Rubiga Thanganathan, BA’24

moved into a new home in BC after completing qualitative research on pro-environmental behaviour at Western.

MacKenzie Brash, BA’17, MA’18

purchased their childhood home in Ontario in 2024.

Bethany Suen, BSc’23,

got into a master’s program for physiotherapy in 2024.

Frank Liu, BMOS’20

became a Canadian citizen in April 2024 after six years in Canada and three years with Western University.

Nicole Strandholm, MLIS’19

was purple and proud in Antarctica this past December, completing her goal of travelling to all seven continents.

Emily Opthof, BSc(FN)’17

was awarded the silver medal at the 2024 Skate Ontario Adult Figure Skating Championships in Kanata, Ontario in the Silver Artistic event. Emily also achieved a season-best score in the Silver Freeskate event and is looking forward to training again for the 2024-25 season.

Vince Bacani, MBA’04

competed against 26 other past champions on the top-rated US quiz show Jeopardy! in the Season 39 Wild Card Tournament. His quarterfinal aired on February 14, 2024.

filmed an episode of House Hunters International for HGTV which documented their house buying process in Ireland.

and Jake Schindler, BMus’18, BSc’19, co-wrote and performed in a folk musical “Ursa” during the Watershed Festival in 2022.

Austin Spademan, HBA’14

has become a TikTok creator reporting on Chicago architecture and culture with a sprinkle of humour.

Shefali Panicker, BHSc’22

first went viral in 2020 for her unique TikTok music mashup featuring her ability to sing in more than nine languages and her online following continues to grow. Read more here.
